On Thursday, April 16, 2026, Aleph Early Learning Center, a local Ditmas Park preschool, was formally recognized by the Department of Health for its exceptional quality of care – reflecting a particularly high standard of practice. “They are not just meeting standards – they are setting them,” said Mary Tuazon, a representative of the Department of Health’s Division of Quality Child Care. Tauzon praised how Aleph’s staff “support meaningful communication and connection in the classroom.”
The recognition, which is not commonly granted, follows a rigorous assessment using the Environment Rating Scales (ITERS), a comprehensive framework that evaluates the depth, intentionality, and effectiveness of early learning environments.
“This is not a basic compliance check – this is a step above,” said Tuazon. “Programs like this can serve as an example for others—particularly in their environment, communication, and especially the quality of interactions. There’s real potential here for hands-on learning and training for other centers.”
The center received particularly strong marks in the area of communication, with a standout emphasis on the quality of teacher-child interactions. Tuazon noted the intentional structure supporting language development, social engagement, and meaningful connection throughout the classroom experience.
The evaluation and recognition were presented by Tuazon, whose involvement with Aleph began in an unexpected way. Initially on a waitlist, the center was moved forward following a conversation that sparked her interest. With a background in Reggio-inspired education, she was particularly drawn to the program – sharing that there was something compelling about the way Aleph brings together a Reggio-inspired philosophy with a rich, values-based Jewish framework, in a way that feels both thoughtful and intentional, and something others can learn from.
The moment was celebrated alongside some supporters and friends of the school – because what’s a meaningful milestone without the people who helped make it possible. Having opened its doors just this past September, the recognition marks a powerful beginning, fueled by a community that believed in it from day one.
Now, just months in, Aleph is already looking ahead. Enrollment for the upcoming school year is open, as the program continues to grow with the same level of intention and care that earned this recognition
